hw2 (2-2-10)

1. What are web acceptable images?
GIF, PNG, JPG

2. What do the acronyms mean?
GIF - Graphics Interchange Format
PNG - Portable Network Graphics
JP(E)G - Joint Photographic Experts Group
BMP - Bitmap

3. How do they differ? In size? In DPI?
GIF - smallest size (8 bits per pixel), 256 colors.
PNG - 24-bit RGB.
JPG - 16-bit format.
BMP - large file size because of lack of compression.

4. Is one better than the other for a certain function?
GIF - Not ideal for photos, better for logos and solid areas of color. Can be transparent and support animation.
PNG - Becoming the most common format for transferring photos on the web. Lossless data compression.
JPG - Size and quality of images can be controlled. Lossy compression.
BMP - Usage in Windows operating system. Simple format.

1. A blog is an online diary; a personal chronological log of thoughts published on a Web page.

2. Five different hosts available to host a free blog. WordPress, Xanga, LiveJournal, Tumblr, Thoughts.

3. What’s the difference between these?

Blogger – Blogger is a free blog service powered by Google. Blogger has the option of running one’s own host or run a host with a team.

Twitter – Twitter is a free social networking and microblogging service that enables its users to send and read messages known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts displayed on the author's profile page and delivered to the author's subscribers who are known as followers.

Facebook – Facebook is a free social-networking website. Users can add friends, send messages, and update their personal profiles to notify friends about themselves. Users are categorized by networks organized by city, workplace, or school.

Myspace - MySpace is a free social-networking website. Users can add friends, send these friends messages, and update personal profiles with photographs and personal information. Unlike Facebook, Myspace can also be personalized with music, images, and other graphics. Mypace users are not categorized into networks.

Linkedin - LinkedIn is a business-oriented social networking site. It is mainly used for professional networking. As of October 2009[update], LinkedIn had more than 50 million registered users, spanning more than 200 countries and territories worldwide.

WordPress - WordPress is an open source blog publishing application that can also be used for basic content management. It has many features including a user-friendly workflow and an advanced templating system.

TypePad - TypePad is a blogging service that is marketed to non-technical users and includes features like multiple author support, photo albums and blogging.
